Mr. Jay Atkins III, age 54, of Kokomo, transitioned March 18, 2020, at Hilton Head Regional Hospital in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Jay was born on Oct. 7, 1965, in Dayton, Ohio.

Although disabled he loved to engage in a variety of personal projects to keep himself busy. He was a member of Second Missionary Baptist Church. Chess was one of his favorite pastimes. He had became an avid player after being introduced to the game at the age of 7. He enjoyed music and was in many ways a bookworm, and would take one of the encyclopedia volumes with him to read as he traveled to keep himself entertained. Jay was taking educational Bible courses as he felt drawn by his heart to complete his biblical studies to be recognized in the ministry. The love of God was truly embedded in his heart. His kind heart always showed in the beautiful cards and flowers that he would give to his mother. He also enjoyed composing poems for others to enjoy.

Jay leaves to cherish his memories, his mother, Shirley Young, of Kokomo, Indiana; stepfather, Charles L. Young Sr., of Kokomo, Indiana; stepsisters, Tonya Colbert (Deric), of Lima, Ohio, Lisa Young, of Louisville, Kentucky, and Willa Dudley, of Columbus, Ohio; first cousins, Gilbert O. Johnson, of Chicago, Illinois, Steven A. Johnson, of Chicago, and Vaughan Avery Atkins, of Bartlett, Illinois; and longtime special friend, Brother Ben Dantly, of Macon, Georgia; and a very special family friend, Bishop Larry D. Trotter, pastor of Sweet Holy Spirit Church in Chicago, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his father, James O. Atkins, Jr.; his maternal grandmother; two aunts; and one uncle.

Special note: Due to the coronavirus pandemic, we will implement advisory visitation and attendance processes to assist with protecting everyone in attendance who wishes to pay their respects for Mr. Jay Atkins and his family.
Mr. Atkins' service will be Thursday, March 26, at 11 a.m., with calling from 10 a.m. until time of services at Second Missionary Baptist Church, 818 Apperson Way N., Kokomo, IN 46903. The Rev.
