Oliver Cobb, Jr.

85, passed away Friday, March 31, 2017. Born Jan. 4, 1932 in St. Louis, Missouri, he was the son of Oliver Cobb Sr. and Thelma Taylor. He was educated in Chicago, Illinois, graduating from Dunbar High School in January 1950. Oliver enlisted in the U. S. Army on Sept. 13, 1950, and was honorably discharged in 1953. He was employed at the U. S. Postal Service beginning in 1953, and he retired in 1987. Oliver was well-known as "Umpire Ollie" from the Little Leaguers to the high schoolers and college divisions.  He was also known all over the world as Ham Operator "WA9QWM." Of his many loves in life, his favorite was riding on his mower "Maverick," enjoying the "green, blue and white." Oliver leaves to cherish his memories his precious children, son,  Stanley (Lori) Cobb; daughters,  Jackie Orndorff and Patricia Cobb; adopted son, Pastor William Gary; adopted daughter, Gale Younger; grandchildren, Stanley (Angel) Cobb Jr., James Orndorff, John Orndorff, Lance Cobb, Sidney Harris and Haley Cobb; great-grandchildren,  Markayiah, Kelis, Mackenzie, Briella, Alonzo, Monwell and Jameiyah. Preceding him in death were his parents, sister and the love of his life of 46 years, Mary Eileen. Services will be noon Saturday, April 8, at Wayman Chapel A.M.E. Church, with calling from 11 a.m. until time of service. Burial will be in Crown Point Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to Bluitt and Son Funeral Home. www.bluittandson.com
